Poetry Paper
Poetry Paper:
For your first paper, you’ll be analyzing poetry, but not just any poetry. To think about the uses of poetry in your everyday life, please pick a song from the billboard top 20 from the last twenty years to read as a poem.
You should formulate a thesis whose claim you can demonstrate and elaborate throughout the paper. It should summarize your overall interpretation of the song. In the essay, you need both to analyze what the song means as a whole and describe how its particulars work as a piece of poetry. The more of the details you can include in your analysis, the stronger and more interesting your reading will be.
Imagine an intelligent reader who may have no knowledge of our class and no special understanding of poetry; in other words, write for a general audience. However, please do refer to the list of poetry and literary devices for your analysis.
Use MLA to format the paper. Be sure to site your song, but you do not need to cite any other outside source. However, if you do cite something else, like an interview with the artist or a review that you think gives insight, that does need to be cited.
The paper should be 3-5 pages long, not including the work cited page.
Tip: Listening to your song is a great way to observe the rhythm and meter, but make sure you also just look at the lyrics as a written work.
