Please read the following cohort or case control study and provide answer (75-100 words) cited per APA (7th ed), please comment on the post in general to discern the best evidence to inform the EBP projects. I attached the rubric. Please use references only from the last 5 years.
The Discussion is:
PICO Q:
Adults with poorly controlled Type 2 Diabetes (P),
Does the use of continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) (I)
When compared to self-monitoring patients through fingerstick glucose checks (C)
Lead to an improvement in HbA1c and reduction in hypoglycemic episodes (O)
In six-month (T)?
A case-control study I chose to present this week is very much related to our PICO question. The author compares self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) with continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in adults with type 2 Diabetes. The strength of this study is a randomized design that increases its validity and minimizes the bias between the two groups (CGM and SMBG). The assessment of HbA1c levels over six months and the occurrence of glycemic incidents fit within our PICO question and the outcomes we expect to find. This study’s weakness is that the sample is small and not demographically diverse. This may impact how the findings apply to a population sample. Further, the study may lead to some bias due to a patient self-reporting protocol (Bergenstal et al., 2022).
In summary, the study indeed presents evidence that continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) is more effective than self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG), supporting our PICO question. Moreover, the study also supports that CGM reduces hypoglycemic episodes among adults with poorly managed Type 2 Diabetes in a short time (over six months).
